What is an Employment Pass?

An Employment Pass (EP) is a work visa issued to expatriates who hold key managerial, technical, or professional positions in Malaysia. It permits foreign nationals to live and work in Malaysia for a specified duration, usually tied to their employment contract.


Types of Employment Passes in Malaysia

Category I:

For high-level managerial or professional positions.


Monthly salary: RM10,000 and above.


Validity: Up to 5 years.


Allows dependents and foreign domestic helpers.


Category II:

For mid-level managerial or technical positions.


Monthly salary: Between RM5,000 and RM9,999.


Validity: Up to 2 years.


Category III:

For temporary or lower-level skilled positions.


Monthly salary: Between RM3,000 and RM4,999.


Validity: Up to 12 months (renewable up to 2 times).


Eligibility Requirements for an Employment Pass

A valid job offer from a company registered in Malaysia.


The company must meet specific paid-up capital requirements:

RM500,000 for Malaysian-owned companies.


RM1,000,000 for foreign-owned companies.


The expatriate must possess relevant qualifications and experience for the position.
